Amazing Japanese Magic
August 31, 2005I bet you David Blaine can’t do this. Reasons why magicians don’t go hungry. You may say that the poster is placed well where someone can sneak it out in the back but the ladies can see what’s going on. Even if you think it’s fake what a really cool trick! Better check this one out.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Movie Review
August 12, 2005| Genre: | Science Fiction & Fantasy |
Starring Johnny Depp
Directed by Tim Burton
Based on the best-selling children’s book by Roald Dahl about a poor good hearted boy named Charlie winning a golden ticket to enter the magical Chocolate Factory owned by strange and wacky Willy Wonka.
The Good: Unlike the other Willy Wonka movie from 1971 starring Gene Wilder this version did more justice to the book showing the origin of how Willy Wonka came to be. Johnny Depp again shows us his versatility as an actor playing the out of this world Willy Wonka. Another thing you will like about the movie is the selection of the child actors not to mention Freddie Highmore who played Charlie who also co starred with Johhny Depp in Finding Neverland.
The Bad: I can’t find anything wrong really with the movie except maybe the singing of the Oompa Loompas. And maybe missing the classic song from the 1971 version. A little tendency to drag but yet remains compelling.
Movie Recipe: Hard to say, more of M&Ms meets The Peanut man meets any Disney movie.
The Verdict: I give this one 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely better than the 1971 version. One of my Tim Burton favorites. A great movie to bring the kids where there is great lesson to be learned in the end.
Stealth Movie Review
| Genre: | Action & Adventure |
Stealth
Starring Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel, and Josh Lucas.
Directed by Rob Cohen
In the not too distant future, an elite squad of jet fighters try to cope with a new member in the form of an A.I. controlled advance jet plane. Things start to go wrong once the jet gets hit with lightning and goes rogue targeting a place where thousands of innocent lives resides. It is up to the squat to try and stop the machine.
The Good: The mapping sequence, if there is one thing I like about the movie it is how they showed the maps, if only they can use it for world geography. Eye Candy action sequences. The surprise change of plot to a sort of rescue misson.
The Bad: Not much eye candy involved especially for a film that revolves around aerial combat. Lack of acting can also account for the lackluster action sequences, I mean you have something like Top Gun which was driven by emotions expressed by the actors which help add tension to the action involved for dog fighting. Stealth did not really show this. The change of the story to focus more on the rescue mission did not go the way I was hoping it would go.
Movie Recipe: “Top Gun” meets “Terminator” meets “Behind Enemy Lines” but in a bad way.
The Verdict: I’d give 1 out of 5 stars, sorry but an action movie that lacked action is definitely bad. The sudden change to a sort of “Behind Enemy Lines” plot didn’t sway me. They could probably use the graphics involved for their mapping sequences with the current education system rather than wasting it in this movie.
Wedding Crashers Movie Review
| Genre: | Comedy |
Starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn
Directed by David Dobkin
A comedy about 2 single guys taking advantage of weddings as a way to hit on women until one of them falls in love with a bridesmaid played by Rachel Mccadams and tries to win her heart.
The Good: I’m a guy who loves crude comedies such as Zoolander, Old School, Meet the Parents, and Dodgeball just to name a few and Wedding Crashers is part of that tradition. Vince Vaughn pretty much stole the show being the ultimate funny man with the quick mouth. Owen Wilson also played out well as the main story character. The cameo of Will Ferrell added a little flavor to the movie.
The Bad: Let’s put it this way, the stars saved the movie. The pacing was rather slow and nothing seemed to stand out. Part of the fault was that cuts were too obvious, I was waiting for scene where Jane Seymour takes it all off. Nothing unforgettable. I was surprised that the movie made it past the 2 hour mark.
Movie Recipe: ”Meet the parents” meets “Hitch” meets “American Pie”.
The Verdict: I give Wedding Crashers 3 out of 5 stars. Don’t get me wrong, I love this kinds of comedies but nothing really stands out except the actors. It had moments but was not able to shine bright. Guys would love this movie and if you like Old school, Meet the Parents, and Something about Mary, then you should definitely watch this.
