What I love about the Philippines: Church Choirs

July 28, 2005

Okay okay, enough of the hating and start participating. When we talk about the Philippines all we say is how much we hate it. Dang! most if not all websites even complain about it, from politics to traffic to whatever. What about the good stuff? We always complain and yet we are here to stay. So why not talk about why we love our country, and here’s my tribute….. What I love about the Philippines.

One of those things I love are Church Choirs….

Church choirs, not that big right? That’s because we take it for granted, like during endings of Mass ceremonies, our tendency is to leave while they are singing their last song not really giving them appluase or something. Now try to go out of the country and try hearing Mass….. now you know the difference.

When I was in the U.S. going to Mass was a little boring heck even Masses here are boring and that’s when the music comes in. Music gives the Mass that extra spice. I never got it there or I hear a group of senior citizens trying to sing, which doesn’t sound right. I’m like, what the heck is going on, I’m in a country where their music is highly regarded all over the world and yet has an out of tune choir. Galing diba?

Back here, everywhere you go the choirs are okay, any Church you go to, you’d here music. Right now, I go to Mass in the La Salle Chapel over at La Salle Greenhills, you want to hear good Church music, then this is the place to be (Kudos to DLSU Chorale and Mass Appeal). When I go out of town, you’d still have good choirs all over.

Maybe it’s our choices in song, some songs have simple lyrics or actual prayers that were turned into song such as “Ama Namin” and some todo kilig to the bones songs like “Anima Christi”. On the funny side, I don’t like “Luwalhati sa Diyos” it’s too long! Any Mass that has that in their musical selection guarantees an approximate Mass time of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Or maybe we Filipinos just love to sing. It runs in the blood daw but yet we haven’t really scored an international hit nor there are viable Filipino talents that’s recognized internationally and i didn’t include Filipinos who live abroad lining up for Jolina Magdangal tickets or something like that okay. I meant international talaga.

To my understanding, I would say it just comes from the heart. Man, I can’t really sing that well, ask my relatives or my friends, but we all sound so good singing along with the choir. Just like singing in the shower…. feel mo talaga.

Now let’s not take our Choirs for granted, one of a kind to, proud to be pinoy. Let’s give all our respective Mass choirs the appreciation that they deserve, let’s not walk out on them. Listen and clap after and I meant it clapping na hindi plastikan like the ones during the state of the nation address. Let’s do it because they sing for the Man, our Man, our Lord. And it’s His way of reaching through us, through good music heard no where else but the Philippines.

[1] Thank you Mico for being so appreciative. I am Inday, choir director of Mass Appeal. I think that for most of us, singing with the group was a God-given opportunity for us to channel our collective talents to thank Him for the abundance of blessings He has showered upon us. We've just had a concert at the Chapel November 16 - I hope you got to watch it. Thanks again.
