Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Movie Review

August 12, 2005
Genre: Science Fiction & Fantasy

Starring Johnny Depp
Directed by Tim Burton

Based on the best-selling children’s book by Roald Dahl about a poor good hearted boy named Charlie winning a golden ticket to enter the magical Chocolate Factory owned by strange and wacky Willy Wonka.

The Good: Unlike the other Willy Wonka movie from 1971 starring Gene Wilder this version did more justice to the book showing the origin of how Willy Wonka came to be. Johnny Depp again shows us his versatility as an actor playing the out of this world Willy Wonka. Another thing you will like about the movie is the selection of the child actors not to mention Freddie Highmore who played Charlie who also co starred with Johhny Depp in Finding Neverland.

The Bad: I can’t find anything wrong really with the movie except maybe the singing of the Oompa Loompas. And maybe missing the classic song from the 1971 version. A little tendency to drag but yet remains compelling.

Movie Recipe: Hard to say, more of M&Ms meets The Peanut man meets any Disney movie.

The Verdict: I give this one 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely better than the 1971 version. One of my Tim Burton favorites. A great movie to bring the kids where there is great lesson to be learned in the end.

Stealth Movie Review

Genre: Action & Adventure

Stealth

Starring Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel, and Josh Lucas.
Directed by Rob Cohen

In the not too distant future, an elite squad of jet fighters try to cope with a new member in the form of an A.I. controlled advance jet plane. Things start to go wrong once the jet gets hit with lightning and goes rogue targeting a place where thousands of innocent lives resides. It is up to the squat to try and stop the machine.

The Good: The mapping sequence, if there is one thing I like about the movie it is how they showed the maps, if only they can use it for world geography. Eye Candy action sequences. The surprise change of plot to a sort of rescue misson.

The Bad: Not much eye candy involved especially for a film that revolves around aerial combat. Lack of acting can also account for the lackluster action sequences, I mean you have something like Top Gun which was driven by emotions expressed by the actors which help add tension to the action involved for dog fighting. Stealth did not really show this. The change of the story to focus more on the rescue mission did not go the way I was hoping it would go.

Movie Recipe: “Top Gun” meets “Terminator” meets “Behind Enemy Lines” but in a bad way.

The Verdict: I’d give 1 out of 5 stars, sorry but an action movie that lacked action is definitely bad. The sudden change to a sort of “Behind Enemy Lines” plot didn’t sway me. They could probably use the graphics involved for their mapping sequences with the current education system rather than wasting it in this movie.

Wedding Crashers Movie Review

Genre: Comedy

Starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn
Directed by David Dobkin

A comedy about 2 single guys taking advantage of weddings as a way to hit on women until one of them falls in love with a bridesmaid played by Rachel Mccadams and tries to win her heart.

The Good: I’m a guy who loves crude comedies such as Zoolander, Old School, Meet the Parents, and Dodgeball just to name a few and Wedding Crashers is part of that tradition. Vince Vaughn pretty much stole the show being the ultimate funny man with the quick mouth. Owen Wilson also played out well as the main story character. The cameo of Will Ferrell added a little flavor to the movie.

The Bad: Let’s put it this way, the stars saved the movie. The pacing was rather slow and nothing seemed to stand out. Part of the fault was that cuts were too obvious, I was waiting for scene where Jane Seymour takes it all off. Nothing unforgettable. I was surprised that the movie made it past the 2 hour mark.

Movie Recipe: ”Meet the parents” meets “Hitch” meets “American Pie”.

The Verdict: I give Wedding Crashers 3 out of 5 stars. Don’t get me wrong, I love this kinds of comedies but nothing really stands out except the actors. It had moments but was not able to shine bright. Guys would love this movie and if you like Old school, Meet the Parents, and Something about Mary, then you should definitely watch this.

What I love about the Philippines: Church Choirs

July 28, 2005

Okay okay, enough of the hating and start participating. When we talk about the Philippines all we say is how much we hate it. Dang! most if not all websites even complain about it, from politics to traffic to whatever. What about the good stuff? We always complain and yet we are here to stay. So why not talk about why we love our country, and here’s my tribute….. What I love about the Philippines.

One of those things I love are Church Choirs….

What were they thinking!?: Taxpayer special carplates!

So okay, now this is way beyond me. Why would they create such vanity plates saying “Taxpayer” on it? Doesn’t most people pay taxes. What about people like me? We pay our taxes, don’t we also get those special plates so I can be exempted from the traffic scheme in Manila.

I’m not sure if it’s the MMDA or some other organization did the plates, but what were you thinking? Bad thing to put on plates. You could’ve at least placed in like something like “Alay Lakad” like the last time.

All of the hardworking Filipinos are taxpayers so please for the love of everything holy, stop using it on cars.

What were they thinking!?: Kris on Bench

July 15, 2005

Sorry I haven’t beenv writing peeps. Anyways, here’s a new edition for y’all It’s called “What were they thinking!?”. You know like crazy ideas maybe marketing maybe something else but in nutshell….a very bad idea!!!

Ok, now for our first edition, let’s do something a little mainstream…. Kris Aquino! Okay Bench, what were you thinking!? First off, I feel sorry for people who pass by the Magallanes Interchange, what a great way to start your day diba? Seeing a picture of a wet look Kris Aquino, it’s just not right and it’s not fair. Bench with great products and lots of goodlooking models can not come up with a better slogan that the slutness of Kris.

I have to admit, Kris doesn’t look bad. She kinda reminds me of Mariah Carey, shoot from only one angle which is the good one and nothing else but they kinda went overboard. I’m sorry Kris but it ain’t a pretty site just like you driving a ferrari in that San Miguel Beer commercial. I kinda feel sorry for that top advertising that San Miguel hired, who ever came out with that commercial should get bitch slap all over metro manila.

Anyways, it goes to show how much shallow most of us filipinos are or how much shallow most advertising firms think we are. A word for Kris, you can’t mingle R and GP out in the market, you have to pick just 1. There are a few exceptions like Eula Valdes and Dina Bonnevie(don’t know if i spelled their names right). They are ageless beauties just like Rene Russo and Michelle Pfieffer. And Bench, I think you have a better use for Kris than advertising Underwear.

Top 5 movie theaters in Manila

June 23, 2005

Okay so finally I can give out my verdict on this one. Being a big movie fan people tend to ask me what are the best movie theaters in Manila are. To determine this we need to focus on what’s important which are:

Visual: Screen clarity
Audio: Clarity and sound equality
Seats: Comfort and placing(no matter where you are seated it aint hard to look at the screen)
Price: Not only how much the movie cost but possible promos.
Customer Service: No hassles at the ticket booth and the snack bars.
Crowd: It’s nice to watch when the audience just watch and not talk. Also if they are disciplined enough to take out their own trash.

Now that you know our criteria, and I’ve pretty much tried all the movie houses let me give you the top 5 movie theaters and the best bargain theaters.

and the top 5 are…… (more…)
